The piles for the building’s superstructure had a span of 7.2-metres, creating an extra challenge for the construction team. With timber joists not generally meeting those spans and weight issues ruling out concrete, Lyle Peterson, Director of Logik Construction, turned to SPEEDFLOOR® for a lightweight steel flooring solution.

The SPEEDFLOOR® standard Steel Joist Flooring System meets a 6.9-metre span — just shy of the 7.2-metres required for this project, so SPEEDFLOOR® contacted their engineer to see if they could adapt the system to meet a wider span. “They came up with a back to back system of a 290-floor joist that exceeded the length of my span, so we pursued it,” explains Lyle.

Just over 20 tonnes of SPEEDFLOOR® lightweight steel joists were specified for the additional level of the building — a combination of FJ150, FJ240 and FJ290 joists. SPEEDFLOOR® completed detailing of midfloor requirements and production of materials off site, helping to reduce build time. The steel joists were pre-cut to size to suit the building’s various spans and delivered in labelled bundles for ease of installation.

Lyle has been impressed by the fast turnaround of SPEEDFLOOR's joists, which has helped to keep the project on track. “I ordered another 180 square metres of joist flooring cassette area on Friday last week. SPEEDFLOOR® worked Friday afternoon and Monday and it’s being delivered this morning (Tuesday). That’s less than a week turnaround for 180 metres of floor joists, so the efficiency is incredible.”

Logik Construction’s qualified builders were new to steel joist construction but took to the SPEEDFLOOR® System quickly. “It has been amazing,” says Peterson. “My chippies had never worked with lightweight steel before. They say it’s much easier than doing big timber joists for the same size.”

The 630 square metre floor deck is nearing completion and Lyle is pleased with the results. “I’ve taken the owner up there and it’s exceeded his expectations for the flooring,” he explains. Pleased with the performance and efficiency of SPEEDFLOOR®, Lyle has already specified the joists for another project — a seven house development in Howick. “I’m using SPEEDFLOOR<span style="position: relative; font-size: 16.0284px; line-height: 0; vertical-align: baseline; reduce the construction programme of the Bruce Pulman Arena and Indoor Courts redevelopment.

The Bruce Pulman Arena is a new $36 million indoor sports centre at Bruce Pulman Park, Papakura, Auckland. The centre provides high quality sporting facilities for the South Auckland area, with multiple courts for netball, basketball, turbo touch, futsal, and volleyball. Overlooking the main arena is a conference and administration block where seminars and events will be hosted, and the administration team will ensure the smooth running of sporting activities.

Peter Hill, Director of Hill Design Engineering Ltd. specified the use of both SPEEDFLOOR® Suspended Concrete and Lightweight Steel Joist systems for the administration block — matching the benefits and advantages of both systems to specific areas of the building. BIM modelling of the lightweight steel joist system with SPEEDFLOOR’s Vertex design software enabled offsite manufacture of the materials, saving time for the onsite construction phase, and reducing onsite material waste in these areas.

The SPEEDFLOOR® Lightweight Steel Joist System with SPEEDFLOOR® Suspended Concrete Floor was installed in the main conference room floor. “One of the reasons for the concrete SPEEDFLOOR® option was the longevity of it and the fact that it spans using a joist system for propping,” says Peter. The self-supporting system enabled construction to continue on the ground floor below soon after the floor was constructed, in turn helping reduce the construction programme of the multi-staged project.

“The system also provided the fire rating and acoustic performance needed,” he says. In addition, the slab fire rating method used by engineers also effectively eliminated the need for fire rated gypsum board systems, again saving significant time and cost.

For the main office area adjacent to the conference room — where the construction crew were working with an existing foundation — Peter opted for the SPEEDFLOOR® Lightweight Joist System with plywood flooring. “We used the lighter system there as we needed lighter loads on the piles,” says Peter. “The SPEEDFLOOR® worked well with the existing charge of the installation, floors were installed quickly and with little interruption to the main construction programme. “Having the installers come in independent from what else was going on site and getting the floors installed efficiently was one of the driving factors for selecting SPEEDFLOOR®,” says Peter.

This resulted in fast, efficient construction times for the project, without compromising on the quality, longevity, and performance of the floors.

This project is also featured as an <a href="https://www.eboss.co.nz/ebossnow/speedfloor-ltd-steel-joist-systems-suspended-concrete-flooring-bim-modelling-save-time"
